Bicycle Maintenance


Purpose: This is a comprehensive, full one day class of hands on bicycle maintenance. Officers will work on their duty bicycles for short and long term maintenance, and will be able to maintain their police fleet. Topics will include:

  • Bicycle nomenclature
  • Tools for the trade
  • Setting up a maintenance station
  • ABC Quick Check
  • Frame inspection
  • Headset adjustments
  • Seat post maintenance and saddle adjustment
  • Drive train maintenance: inspect, clean, lube
  • Changing a flat tire
  • Wheels, rims, rim strips, tires, tubes, valves, sizing
  • Wheel truing
  • Braking systems: checking, adjusting, changing/lubing cables and pads, disc brake maintenance
  • Pedal removal, maintain, and reinstall
  • Adjusting derailleurs; barrel and limiting screws
  • Replacing derailleurs, cables, housing, and rear hangar repair/replacement
  • Checking chain length and tension, chain replacement, “Master-links”
  • Addressing “chain suck”
  • Trouble shooting: Problem-Based Learning Exercises
