IPMBA Basic Police Cyclist Course

 LOCATION: 878 West Cross, McKenny Hall, Tower Room #348

HOURS: This IPMBA certification course consists of three 11-hour days-0800-1900 hrs.

During the 3-(extended) day Basic Cyclist Course operators will learn how to safely and effectively conduct patrol operations while riding an agency issued mountain bike. The Basic Cyclist Course is physically and mentally demanding. Participants will be required to pass a written test as well as a performance-based test on their bicycle.   

The following areas are covered in depth:  

  • Uniforms and equipment
  • Basic bicycle operations 
  • Maneuvering in various traffic and environmental conditions including: low and high-level obstacle clearing and patrolling in crowds
  • Legal issues 
  • Patrol procedures and tactics
  • Basic bicycle maintenance
  • Low light operations 

Participant Requirements:

  • Mountain bike with a rear mounted bike rack, kickstand
  • Headlight and taillight
  • ANSI, Snell or CPSC approved bicycle helmet
  • Shatter resistant eye protection for both day and night rides
  • Water bottle or hydration system
  • Padded cycling shorts rain and/or cold weather gear is recommended
  • Basic bike repair tools, i.e., tire irons, spare tubes, tire patch kit, frame pump or air source, Phillips/flat head screwdrivers, and Allen wrenches
